The 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is a breath of fresh air from the SUV dominated market. The traditional four-door is given hybrid efficiency and it is definitely an advantage. It is impressive at maintaining fuel economy without sacrificing too much in terms of appearance and performance.

As a traditional sedan, the 2019 Buick Lacrosse does not seem to make mistakes. It is upgraded to have a hybrid battery, leveling the ground for other hybrids, like the Avalon.

Design & Style

Unlike most cars that look too much with a busy exterior, the Avalon Hybrid is able to pull it off well. It has daring lines on the sides, the floor, and the beltline. There is also a wide and massive grille with laser-cut headlights. At the back are interesting decklid spoilers with progressive LED taillights. The contrasting colors on its cabin complement the mixed materials used. The front seats even have perforated stipples that made it look pricier than it actually is.

The Lacrosse had been redesigned back in 2017. It is now given a curvy hood and simple sweeping headlights to tame the front end. The rear side is simple with nothing but the down-curving taillights. Although the interior of the Lacrosse is clean, the integration of the infotainment does not sit well with the cabin layout.

Technology & Safety

Technology for the Avalon Hybrid is slightly modernized to include Apple CarPlay on top of the native Entune infotainment system. It also has a lot of driver safety aids that all come as standard equipment.

The infotainment for the Lacrosse is not exceptional. In fact, most of the in-car tech features and driver aids are optional.

Performance

For the Avalon Hybrid, power stems from the combined 2.5 liter engine and two electric motors. The total output is 215 hp and it is more than enough to drive at highway speeds without too much effort. The suspension is designed to maintain a comfortable ride, even with the side bolsters. It also remains quiet and composed just like the non-hybrid Avalons. Overall the hybrid model is mildly engaging and is sufficiently powered for daily drives.

On top of the 2.5-liter engine, the Lacrosse is also powered by a small electric motor for a combined output of 194 hp. The mild hybrid setup feels overtaxed and it sounds strained upon acceleration. The steering feels rubbery and artificial while handling feels unsettled when pushed a little.

The Bottom Line

The restrained styling of the 2019 Buick Lacrosse is no match against the fun yet sophisticated exterior of the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. More than its appearance, however, the Avalon Hybrid also excels at performing on the road without so much effort compared to the Lacrosse.
