While it is known to have a plain vanilla flavor from the past, the 2019 Toyota Camry is now back with a fresh and edgy appeal. Its personality is still a little sedated but the hybrid configuration and better looks make it on point on the current standards for style and performance.

While the Camry is praised for its redesigned version, the 2019 Subaru Legacy remains an underdog in its class. Here is a comparison to see why the Legacy can't seem to pass under-the-radar.

Design & Style

The Camry is now stylish with its eye-catching shape. The wide and gaping lower grille gave the Camry a muscular look. The roofline is sloping to the truncated tail and complex taillights. There are also a spoiler and a faux diffuser underneath the bumper for the SE and XSE trims. Even the cabin is dramatically styled with the sharp matte silver lines on the dashboard.

The Legacy has clean lines but not pushing its limits, design wise, made it look bland. The cabin also looks simple and the use of beige and gray colors made the interior look dull and uninspired. It is a good thing that higher trims get to have contrast stitching on the dash to liven things up even for just a little notch higher.

Technology & Safety

The infotainment on the Camry is easy to use. The layout is simple yet effective with its chunky buttons and the crisp touchscreen display. There are driver aids that come as standard and they all work excellently. The key in maximizing the voice recognition features on the Camry is to complete the setup process thoroughly. Do that and you will have perfectly reliable controls using voice commands.

Most of the tech features on the legacy can be controlled using the touchscreen display. It also has standard active safety features for its driver aids.

Performance

All of the Camry trims is powered by a 2.5-liter engine for a total of 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Higher trims, however, can have the optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine for up to 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. It drives with more spirit and adequate power. The well-weighted steering is notable at keeping a good on-center feel.

The Legacy is also powered by a 2.5-liter engine but it feels underwhelming with only 175 hp and 174 lb-ft. even the optional V-6 does not deliver as much power at only 256 hp and 246 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration feels tepid and the real deal-breaker is its spongy brake pedal that does not feel strong or reliable on the road.

The Bottom Line

Coming fresh from a redesign, the 2019 Toyota Camry proves that it has something more to offer other than being fuel efficient. The main reason why the 2019 Subaru Legacy failed to make the same good impressions on the Camry is that it is very restrained when it comes to styling, technology, and engine configurations.
