The new 2019 Toyota Corolla is a fun and dependable choice either as a hatch or as a sedan. This small car is here for more than half a decade and its history speaks of reliability, comfortable features, and ample passenger seats. The 2019 model is still much the same with the previous Corollas in terms of outstanding quality, and more. Another compact car that is as familiar as the Corolla is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra. It has several varieties to suit everyone's tastes but will it be enough against the appealing characteristics of the Corolla?
Design & Style
The Corolla has bold front-end featuring edgy lines that surround a wide black swath beneath the grille. The LED headlights are now narrower to complement the menacing lower fascia. It is toned down by the simple side and rear end which makes the exterior design nicely-balanced. There are also new colors to choose from, like sky blue, for a more expressive Corolla. The cabin has synthetic leather materials that feel soft to touch and also durable.
The Elantra also went for a sharp styling starting with the bold headlights that dig deep into its front end. There is a belt line that extends to the rear roof pillar but it was not executed well and looks awkward on its exterior.
Technology & Safety
The Corolla is equipped with nice infotainment features and standard driver aids. The Toyota Entune app takes care of the Smartphone integration which opens up other functions like navigation. The display has a sharp screen resolution and it is framed by a lovely glassy piano black surface.
The infotainment for the Elantra is not impressive in terms of presentation. It is easy to use but clearly missing the wow factor. There is a voice recognition system but the available system controls is also disappointing.
Performance
The Corolla is a fun ride, especially with the right configurations. The base model starts with a 132 hp engine and delivers a more composed handling than the previous models. It also has better acceleration and is more refined to drive than its usual rivals. The hatchback version has a more global powertrain at 168 hp. The 6-speed manual is tuned towards a sporty driving experience.
The 2019 Elantra still has the same 147-hp engine and although it is now more satisfying to drive, the overall performance is still underwhelming.
The Bottom Line
The 2019 Toyota Corolla stands confidently on top of the 2019 Hyundai Elantra. It is a competent ride that is geared towards maintaining comfort. It also scores well when it comes to safety features making it dependable for everyday commute.
