The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is a sporty SUV with many different trim options, a powerful hybrid and numerous safety features. But how does it stack up against the 2019 Jeep Gladiator, a hardy vehicle with turbo diesel, tremendous off-road abilities and lots of engine power?
Design & Style
Visually, the Jeep Gladiator is as rugged as they come, living up to its name. From the front and side, it resembles a shortened pickup truck, with fender flares that are chunky, a grille with seven slots and thick tires. Within the cabin, the dashboard is very similar to the Jeep Wrangler. The controls are elevated, with a radio display that is five inches. Leather upholstery can be added with vinyl that is stitched. Externally, the Toyota RAV4 uses multiple trapezoidal grilles which give it a Spartan appearance. The fender flares are prominent, with tail lights that are mounted high and roof pillars that have added bulk. Inside, the cabin has a centralized console which is elevated with seating that is comfortable with distinct upholstery patterns.
Technology & Safety
The Toyota RAV4 has received the prestigious Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS as well as a five-star independent testing rating. This is a testament to the many important safety measures it has, such as cruise control that is adaptive, the ability to detect pedestrians, lane control and blind area monitoring. It also has 8 airbags, brakes that antilock, and within the cabin, luxuries such as Apple CarPlay, USB port, seven-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. The Jeep Gladiator comes with many fundamental safety features, but is devoid of airbags for the curtain side, due to its removable top. It does have blind area monitoring, parking sensors, and automatic emergency brakes. Within the cabin, passengers will enjoy Android Auto, power locks and windows, heated seats and touch screens which are just over eight inches in size.
Performance
Going off-road requires substantial engine power, and the Jeep Gladiator has it. It is equipped with the same V6, 3.6-liter engine that is found in the Wrangler that can generate an impressive 285 horsepower. The engine works best with an automatic eight-speed transmission. The Toyota RAV4 comes with an inline 4, 2.5-liter engine that can produce 203 horsepower with 184 pounds of torque, which is also wedded to an eight-speed automatic.
The Bottom Line
Both of these SUVs are tough and designed to operate on difficult terrain. And although the Jeep Gladiator has considerable engine power, its lacking of key safety features such as side airbags and inadequate luxuries compared to the Toyota makes the RAV4 the winner.
