The 2019 Toyota Sequoia is a powerful SUV that attracts many drivers due to its V8 engine, roomy interior and the ability to tow more than 7,000 pounds.  But the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer has gotten lots of positive attention due to its V6 engine, interior amenities, and towing capabilities. Which one wins?

Design & Style

The Chevrolet Blazer has sculpted sides, with a canopy that floats and a premium look overall. It has LED lights in front, with large wheels that give it an uptick in back. Extra metallic trim is visible in the Premium variants, and inside the dash is shaped like a wing, with symmetrical buttons well organized in the central stack. The exterior of the Toyota Sequoia is curved softly, with a sturdy shape that commands respect. The fascias in front and back have been updated, with angles that are segmented and sharper than in previous editions. Inside, the surfaces are covered with reinforced plastic trim and the almost vertical dashboard pays homage to its truck origins.

Technology & Safety

The Toyota Sequoia comes with a bunch of safety countermeasures designed to protect passengers (and even nearby pedestrians) at all times. These include notifications for cross traffic in the rear, backup camera, automated emergency brakes, and warnings when departing lanes. It also has headlights which are an automatic and high beam, multiple airbags and frontal impact alerts. Within the cabin, passengers will be comforted by seats that are power-adjustable, heated mirrors, sunroof, six-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, and climate control which are tri-zone.  The Chevrolet Blazer has received a 5 star safety rating from federal agencies. It has outstanding protection against frontal and side collisions, as well as rollover protection. A camera for the rearview can be added, and it also comes with a nifty feature that helps drivers when ascending/descending hills. Perks within the interior include audio streaming with Bluetooth, radio, four USB ports, Android Auto, power windows and locks, two-zone climate control, and eight-inch touchscreens.

Performance

The Chevy Blazer lives up to its name. It has an inline 4, 2.5-liter engine that can produce 193 horsepower with 188 pounds of torque with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It can tow up to 4,500 pounds.  The Toyota Sequoia comes with a V8 engine that can generate 381 horsepower with 401 pounds of torque.

The Bottom Line

Although both these SUVs are similar in price, the Sequoia is overwhelmingly superior with regard to performance and towing capacity. This combined with the Blazer's smaller size and need to pay extra for emergency automatic brakes makes Toyota the winner.
