The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is a highly sought after SUV. Its large interior, exceptional ride quality, and ample cargo area make it ideal for families. But can it surpass the 2019 Toyota Sequoia, a formidable SUV that comes with a V8 engine, the ability to tow 7,000 pounds and lots of space of its own?

Design & Style

The Sequoia is named after a large redwood tree and lives up to it. It has a bulky outer shape which is slightly curved along the edges, with enhanced fascias in the back and front. The look has been furthered modernized with the addition of chrome pieces that are segmented. The Sequoia's frame is based on that of a truck, so it uses natural proportions that are accompanied by a front overhang that has been shortened. Hard, reinforced plastic covers the interior, with faux wood trim in some places. Volkswagen is also aptly named for a Greek deity that was said to hold up the sky. It is a big crossover with three-row seating. A broad grille can be seen in front, with headlights that are rectangular and fender flares that are massive. The frame sits on wheels that are twenty inches in size and within the cabin; the dash has been lowered to provide drivers will enhanced visibility.

Technology & Safety

The Atlas captured a prestigious five star NHTSA rating. Drivers and passengers will be protected by emergency automatic brakes, notifications for cross traffic in the rear, lane control that is active, cruise control and driver assist. Cabin perks include Apple CarPlay, cloth upholstery, climate control, heated/cooled seats, and a sunroof which is panoramic. The Toyota Sequoia responds with many safety features of its own, like headlights which are automated and high beam, frontal impact warnings, notifications when departing lanes, knee, side and frontal airbags, and automatic emergency brakes.  Perks include a steering wheel wrapped in leather, seats that can be power adjusted, tri-zone climate control and satellite radio.

Performance

The Toyota Sequoia offers breathtaking performance, the result of its V8 engine, which can produce 381 horsepower with 401 pounds of torque. The Volkswagen Passat answers with a V6, 3.6-liter engine that can produce 276 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

A rivalry between these two SUVs was inevitable. Both are well designed and evenly matched in safety features and luxury perks. Unfortunately for the Atlas, the Toyota has a stronger engine which results in superior performance and the ability to tow greater loads, and this combined with the Volkswagen's inefficiency makes the Sequoia the winner.
