For years, the Ford F-150 has been America's most popular pickup truck, and for many, the 2019 edition is no exception. But the 2019 Toyota Tacoma has rapidly built a dedicated fan base, due to its active safety features, bold style and off-road capabilities. Which should you buy?
Design & Style
Visually, the Toyota Tacoma is notable for its elevated riding stance, upright front and fenders which are flared. It has multiple configurations, including crew cab as well as extended, and buyers get the option of a six-foot bed although the five-bed is standard. The Ford F-150 uses a classical dual box design. The body is both contentious as well as aerodynamic, and within the interior, it has a plain dash that uses materials that are simple to clean, with a large LCD screen and wood and leather surfaces.
Technology & Safety
The F-150 has done exceedingly well on crash tests. The NHTSA awarded it five stars, due to its outstanding protection against rollover. Other countermeasures include blind area monitoring, frontal impact notifications; cruise and lane control and rear seat belts that can inflate. Additional perks in the cabin include radio, vinyl flooring, air conditioning, and rear seats that flip up. The wheel is also telescopic and overall the Ford F-150 can be configured in a host of different ways, which is one reason why it's so popular. The Toyota Tacoma has also received excellent safety scores, due to its ability to detect pedestrians automatically, issue warnings when departing lanes, blind area monitoring and emergency automatic brakes. Inside passengers will have access to seven-inch touchscreens, keyless ignition, leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control.
Performance
The Toyota Tacoma comes with an inline 4, 2.7-liter engine that provides 159 horsepower, but which can be upgraded to a V6, 3.5 liter that provides 278 horsepower. It uses a six-speed automatic transmission. The Ford F-150 comes with a V6 engine that is 3.3 liter and capable of generating 290 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
Both of these pickup trucks are impressive in their own right. Performance-wise, they are almost evenly matched, as both can be outfitted with V6 engines. Despite this, the Ford F-150 has a number of things working against it. Many of the safety options cost extra, and the diesel doesn't tow as much as you'd expect in a truck of this caliber. This combined with the fact that the Tacoma has more luxury features within the cabin means that those who buy it will have more comfortable riding experience, so the Toyota wins.
