The 2019 Toyota Yaris is recommended for those who are looking for a vehicle with a nice set of standard features and good driving dynamics. While the last Yaris model was a hatchback, the 2019 version is a four-door sedan that is both engaging and fun to drive.

For people who value personality more than anything else, the 2019 Fiat 500 is one that can also be considered, aside from the Yaris. There are notable drawbacks, however, for this subcompact vehicle which is quite obvious when compared to much better competition, such as the Yaris.

Design & Style

The Yaris has toned-down its styling and although it blends in the crowd, it has managed to maintain a look that simply stands out. It looks narrow from the outside but the cabin is sufficiently roomy. The reason is that the seats have good adjustability so the passengers are accommodated nicely across a wide range of body sizes.  The cabin has a simple layout that goes so well with the simple yet effective arrangement of the controls.

The Fiat 500 is all about style. It carries its modern-retro vibes so well, especially with the perfectly round headlights. It would be nicer if they kept the original dimensions rather than the larger ones. The cabin is also charming but the details look too much.

Technology & Safety

The infotainment system of the Yaris is unassuming but it works really well. It is easy to use compared to other vehicles and the standard audio setup delivers crisp and clean sound. Bluetooth pairing is available for connectivity and it works fast and is consistently reliable.

Because it focused on its looks, most of the desirable in-car tech features are missing on the Fiat 500. Most buyers would want, at least, a good stereo even on a subcompact car.

Performance

All trims of the Yaris is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine for a 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. It delivers a playful handling and a notable transmission. Such combination results to having the most fun in driving a small car.

The 1.4-liter engine of the Fiat 500 produces 135 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. It is maneuverable but its performance is never sporty. Its acceleration is not impressive and driving comfort is extremely compromised because the seat and steering adjustability are limited.

The Bottom Line

If you are after a car that looks great but also performs, then the 2019 Toyota Yaris is highly recommended. The 2019 Fiat 500 may be a looker but it does not compensate on the fact that it lacks a lot of technology features that many people look for from a modern car.
