The 2019 Ford Fusion is a hybrid vehicle that has multiple engine options, attractive looks, and lots of safety gear. How does it compare to the 2019 Toyota 86, a sporty vehicle which has nimble handling, an affordable price tag, and a quality interior?
Design & Style
The Toyota 86 has many of the characteristics seen in classic sports cars, such as its extended hood, wide and low stance, angular front and sloping roof. The fenders are also flared, with a tidy back that completes the look. The cabin is covered in flowing lines that look great with metallic trim and carbon faux fiber. The Ford Fusion has a prominent grille with chrome bars that are horizontal. The roofline is elongated, yet flows smoothly until it reaches the trunk lid. The upholstery in the cabin has also been updated, with matte trim silver near the dash.
Technology & Safety
The Ford Fusion is equipped with an array of active safety features, which has given it favor with both the IIHS and NHTSA. It has automated emergency brakes, frontal and rollover protection, the ability to detect pedestrians, blind area monitoring and cruise control that is adaptive. Comforts in the interior include eight-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, climate control which is dual-zone, and navigation that is baked in. The Toyota 86 has brakes with antilock capability, lots of airbags, traction and stability control, and a differential which is a limited-slip and provides greater handling. A camera for the rearview will help drivers see what is behind them, and comforts within the cabin include 7-inch touch screens from Pioneer, Bluetooth support, keyless entry, climate control, Android Auto and lots of USB ports and auxiliary jacks.
Performance
The Toyota 86 comes with a flat 4, 2-liter engine that generates 205 horsepower with 156 pounds of torque. Since it is light in weight, it is extremely fast and maneuverable. The Ford Fusion comes with an inline, 2.5-liter engine that can produce175 horsepower. The power it produces peaks high, usually around 4500 RPM, which means that it must be revved to provide quality acceleration. Its engine functions well with the six-speed automatic transmission.
The Bottom Line
These two cars are attractive, sporty, and well-matched across most metrics. As such choosing between them will be difficult for some buyers. However, Ford has announced that it may discontinue the Fusion, the rear seat in back offers inadequate space and its fuel economy is unimpressive when compared to non-hybrids, so the Toyota 86 wins.
