The 2019 Toyota Highlander has received praise for its potent V6, upscale ride quality, and relaxing cabin. But how does it stack up against the 2019 Buick Envision, an SUV which has a powerful engine of its own, with superb infotainment and crisp styling?
Design & Style
The Buick Envision features overhangs that are short and which give it a pert appearance. The exterior lines are swoopy, giving it the illusion of being bigger than it actually is. Both LED and HID lights have been added, with an enhanced grille that completes the outer exterior. The dashboard inside is both curvy and organic, with switches and buttons that are organized via a function. Visually, the Toyota Highlander is very much the opposite, with an exterior full of sharp angles. The grille is razor-like, with a snout that protrudes and gives it a predatory look. The dashboard within the interior is wide and positioned in a logical manner, with lots of storage space and USB chargers. Some surfaces are covered in faux wood that looks quite attractive.
Technology & Safety
The Toyota Highlander has a stellar safety record, as it has done well both in crash and equipment tests. Passengers will be protected by cruise control that is adaptive, frontal impact notifications, emergency automatic brakes, warnings when departing lanes, and high beam lights which are automated. Comforts include touchscreens which are 6.1 inches, Bluetooth support, and navigation via smartphone, climate control which is tri-zone and powered seating. Although the Buick Envision has done equally well in crash tests, it restricts many active safety features to higher trims that cost extra. This includes automated emergency brakes and cruise control which is adaptive. It also has blind area monitoring and alerts for frontal impacts. Luxuries within the interior include heated seats, keyless ignition; touch screens which are eight inches, power liftgate, and Android Auto.
Performance
The Buick Envision comes with an inline 4 that is 2.5 liter and capable of generating 197 horsepower with 192 pounds of torque. It uses an automatic six-speed transmission that transfers power to the wheels in front, and buyers get all-wheel drive if they choose the Essence or Preferred trim. The Toyota Highlander comes with a 4 cylinder, 2.7-liter engine that produces 185 horsepower with 184 pounds of torque.
The Bottom Line
Both of these SUVs are closely matched in a variety of areas. Unfortunately for the Envision, the fact that buyers have to pay more for essential safety features along with the lower build quality of the cabin makes the Toyota Highlander the winner.
