For years, many people considered the Dodge Challenger the quintessential American muscle car, and the 2019 edition is no different. Its all-wheel-drive, uncompromising design and formidable engine make it fun to drive. But Toyota has responded with the release of the 2019 Mirai, a powerhouse of a car with a relaxing interior, extensive range and substantial power. Which of the two is supreme?

Design & Style

The Toyota Mirai has an exterior that is as sharp as a samurai sword. It seats a maximum of four and is hydrogen powered.  The taillights in front are narrow with a prominent grille and bulbous tail in back. The Dodge Challenger has a design that pays homage to the 1960s and 70s. It has a prominent maw, with wide haunches and a roof that is low. The grille in front is inset deep, with headlights that are spherical. Those who purchase the performance editions will gain access to spoilers and fascias.

Technology & Safety

The latest Dodge Challenger lacks many of the safety features which are standard in its contemporaries. For instance, it still doesn't have emergency automatic brakes. It has performed well on safety tests, which is its saving grace. It has a camera for the rearview, cruise control that is adaptive, assistance when ascending hills, 6 airbags and alerts for cross traffic. Interior perks include climate control that is two zones, seven-inch touchscreens, Android Auto and seats that can be power adjusted. The Toyota Mirai comes with emergency automatic brakes, lane control that is active and blind area monitoring. Perks within the cabin include leather upholstery, front seats that can be heated/cooled, climate control that is dual-zone, Apple CarPlay, USB ports, and touchscreens which are seven inches. Toyota even threw in a three-year hydrogen fuel supply.

Performance

The Toyota Mirai is a state of the art car that uses a fuel cell system as opposed to a traditional engine. It can generate 153 horsepower which is accomplished through compressed hydrogen which mixes with oxygen to produce electricity that then energizes a motor that propels the wheels in front. The Dodge Challenger comes with a V6, 3.5-liter engine that can generate 305 horsepower, which is wedded to an automatic eight-speed transmission.

The Bottom Line

The Dodge Challenger has a lot going for it in terms of power and performance, but what good is it when it doesn't even have emergency automatic brakes? This combined with its excessive weight, inadequate space and poor fuel economy makes the Toyota Mirai the winner.
