The 2019 Toyota Tundra is a tough, no-nonsense pickup truck that was designed for blue-collar work. Its powerful V8 engine allows it to haul heavy cargo, but it comes with a spacious interior designed to comfort passengers while it does. Some have compared it to the 2019 GMC Sierra, and this is understandable, as it also uses a straightforward style with a roomy interior and lots of power trains. Which of the two is superior?
Design & Style
Visually, the GMC Sierra is covered in conservative exterior lines. Most of its edges are straight, with a large chrome grille that slices a taper as it descends between large headlights that are C shaped. LEDs come with some variants, and within the cabin, drivers will be presented with a heads up style display with a panel that is shield-shaped and which ropes off many of the central controls for climate and audio control. The Toyota Tundra also has a prominent grille in front, with fenders that are large and an extended cab. The doors are wide, which makes it easy for passengers to get in and out, and within the interior surfaces are covered by plastic silver trim. The dashboard is symmetrical, and the controls are situated beneath six or seven-inch touchscreens.
Technology & Safety
The Toyota Tundra has some of the best safety techs in its class. Most of it is active, such as headlights which are automated and high beam, notifications when departing lanes and pedestrian detection. Automatic emergency brakes are also available, along with cruise control. The NHTSA has given it a four-star rating, and within the cabin, passengers will enjoy cooled/heated seats, soft leather, audio from JBL and a moon roof. The GMC Sierra has also received a four-star safety rating, this time from the NHTSA. It is equipped with safety techs such as automatic emergency brakes, frontal impact warnings, and lane and cruise control. Cabin perks include Android Auto, Bluetooth support, air conditioning and USB ports.
Performance
The GMC Sierra comes with a V8, 5.3-liter engine that can produce 355 horsepower with 383 pounds of torque. The Toyota Tundra also comes with a V8, which is 5.7 liter and capable of producing 381 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
Both of these trucks are incredibly close in performance, safety, interior amenities, and looks. Unfortunately for the GMC Sierra, its gas mileage leaves a lot to be desired, and because some have complained that its max towing is also inadequate, the Toyota Tundra is the winner.
